  • FUN FACT FOR TODAY

In September 2022, NBCLA reported that the Los Angeles SoCal Edison spent $18 million for a Heli-Tanker 55 chopper and two other choppers like it. SCE estimated that the choppers would reduce the probability of losses from fire by 65 to 70%.

If you are like me, you wonder how these large water bombers fly over a lake, reservoir, river, and even the ocean and pick up water without landing. So, I did a little digging and found out.

A specially designed scoop is attached to the bottom of the plane, shaped like a bucket that is lowered into the water, and a valve is opened to allow water in. Once the scoop is full, the pilot raises it up and closes the valve, and the water is pumped into the plane's wingtip tanks.

The aircraft requires 1,340 m (4,400 ft) of flyable length to descend from 15 m (49 ft) altitude, scoop 6,137 L (1,350 imp gal; 1,621 US gal) of water during a twelve-second 410-metre-long (1,350 ft) run on the water at 70 knots (130 km/h; 81 mph), then climb back to 15 m (49 ft) altitude. The scoopers can drop 1,400 gallons of water on a wildfire in minutes and deliver about nine loads of water in one hour.

That's my fun fact for today.
